Sister Estelle Marie McKeever, OP

Sister Estelle Marie McKeever, OP (formerly Catharine Gertrude) of the Dominican Sisters of Hope, Newburgh, New York, died July 31, 2008 in the infirmary of the Dominican Sisters of Hope, Newburgh, New York. She was 80 years old.

Sister Estelle Marie was born in December 1927 in Burlington, New Jersey.in September 1945, made her First Profession in June 1947, and Final Profession in August 1950. Sister Estelle earned her BA in Latin from Villanova University, her MA in Latin from Catholic University, and her Masters in Library Science from Long Island University.

Sister Estelle began her teaching ministry at Saint Joseph Elementary School in Toms River NJ in 1947. From 1948-52 she taught at Saint Rose School in Haddon Heights NJ, and from 1952-59 at Holy Family School in New Rochelle NY. From 1959-69, she taught Latin at Our Lady of Lourdes High School in Poughkeepsie NY. From 1969-70, she was principal at Immaculate High School in Danbury CT. Subsequent ministries included: English teacher at Gloucester Catholic High School in Gloucester NJ (1970-71), Latin teacher at Our Lady of Lourdes High School in Poughkeepsie NY (1971-75), librarian at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh NY (1975-88, 1989-2001), and congregational archivist (1983-88). During the year, 1988-89, she enjoyed a sabbatical in Rome, Italy. Upon her return, she continued to work in the library at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh until her retirement.
