Sister Margaret Kilpatrick, OP

Sister Margaret Kilpatrick, OP (formerly Sister Robert Marie) of the Dominican Sisters of Hope, died suddenly Tuesday, June 19, 2007 while on retreat at Elkins Park, Pennsylvania. She was 82.

The daughter of the late Robert James and Estelle G. Browne Kilpatrick, she was born November 10, 1924 in Newburgh, New York.

Sister Margaret entered the novitiate of the Dominican Sisters of Newburgh on September 8, 1942, made her First Profession June 18, 1944, and Final Profession August 25, 1949. Sister Margaret earned her BA in History from Villanova University and her MA in History from Catholic University. She also received her LPN from St. Joseph School of Practical Nursing in Yonkers, New York.

Ministry history:
Sister Margaret taught elementary level students at Saint Thomas School in Cornwall NY (1945-45), Dominican Day School in Larchmont NY (1946-51), Annunciation School in Crestwood NY (1951-58), and Saint Mary School in Newburgh NY (1958-60). From 1960-67 she was history teacher at Mount Saint Mary Academy in Newburgh NY, then at Pope Pius XII Regional High School in Passaic NJ (1967-76). After completing LPN studies at St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in Yonkers NY (1976-77) she ministered as a nurse in the Mount Saint Mary Infirmary in Newburgh (1977-80), then at Little Sisters of the Assumption Health Center on 119th Street, New York City, as a nurse aide and ESL teacher. She was a member of the founding staff at Newburgh Ministry in Newburgh (1983-90). Following a sabbatical, Sister Margaret was a social worker with New Community in Newark NJ (1991-93). From 1993-2003, she did social and pastoral ministry at St. John the Baptist Friary in Manhattan, where she directed the Food and Clothing Pantry.

Sister Margaret is survived by her sister, Sister Maris Stella Kilpatrick, OP, and an aunt, Matilda Kilpatrick.
