| Sister Nancy Burke, OP (Sister John Margaret) of the Dominican Sisters of Hope, Newburgh, New York, died July 28, 2007 in Vassar Hospital, Poughkeepsie, New York. She was 80 years old. The daughter of the late John A. and Margaret Burke , she was born July 2, 1927 in Newton, County Galway, Ireland. Sister Nancy entered the novitiate of the Dominican Sisters of Newburgh on December 8, 1950, made her First Profession June 17, 1952, and Final Profession August 22, 1955. Sister Nancy earned her BA degree in Education from Mt. St. Mary College in Newburgh, New York. Teaching assignments included Academia San Jose Elementary School in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico (1976-78); Saint Boniface School in Paterson, New Jersey (1961-66) and Saint Lawrence School in Lindenwold, New Jersey (1952-61). She served as principal of Annunciation School in Crestwood, New York (1971-76); at Saint Mary School in Newburgh, New York (1969-71); and at Our Lady of Lourdes School in Paterson, New Jersey (1966-69). From 1978 to 2002, Sister Nancy taught at Assumption School in Fairfield, Connecticut. She moved to the Center of Hope in Newburgh, New York, in 2002, where she has spent much of her time providing hospitality and a welcoming environment for visitors. |
